Serious stuff

Much has been written about the recent austerity drive undertaken by the Congress government and the subsequent effects of this on their members (most notably Shashi Tharoor and the positively ludicrous ‘cattle-class’ episode). The Times of India recently carried an article about the Government extending this austerity drive to the C.E.O.s of private companies as well. Imposition of stringent restrictions on the spending of politicians and other people in (supposed) public service makes complete sense since it is the tax-payers money that is being used. However applying the same standards to the private companies is not only unfair to them but also ridiculous in that the salaries that the employees is entirely the organisations prerogative. Putting a cap on salaries makes absolutely no sense as the amount of salary offered often decides whether a company can get the man it wants or not. The salary cap on the CEOs of private organisations sends the country back fifty years to the days when ‘profit was a dirty word’.

It is indeed depressing that even though the Congress now has the absolute majority, the absence of which critically impeded their actions last term, they are not addressing the issues which were bound to be opposed by someone or the other in their coalition last term but are in fact wasting their time stretching fundamentally good initiatives to the point of rupture by applying them outside their domain of validity.

-I totally agree with the decision to set up a new organisation to handle terror attacks in India. But since our leaders are bound to politicise the issue , the handling of this new body should be totally independent of politicians . They shouldn’t know anything about the workings of this body . I’d say don’t even tell them who heads the body. Just give them one contact who’ll act as messenger between the government and this body. We should also make a constitutional amendment to hand over absolute power to this body in the event of an attack and the politicians shouldn’t be allowed to make public appearances or give interviews /addresses without the express permission of this body. NO red tape . NO political involvement. It should be as simple as that. There’s a terror attack – get the politicians out , get the sensible people in charge.

-Screw fundamental rights. Put a gag order on all divisionist parties and their members for life. These people are insane . In fact don’t even let them  make public appearances. And for goodness sake arrest them when they don’t comply with these rules (as they surely won’t) Why the hell are  these people not already in jail?

-Hold talks with Pakistan in full view of the world. Tell them the location of all the wanted terrorists living there and ask them to arrest them . If they go round the issue of committing to making arrests (Like shah Mehmood Qureshi did in his NDTV interview) , say it like it is: This means one of two things: 1. They lied about helping out against terror and are accomplices to terror. or 2. They are cowards and are scared to take the necessary action.

India Inc is set to lose Rs50,000 /- crore because of this attack not to mention huge losses in terms of Human capital (some of the people who dies were after all some of the most successful people in India). NDTV also reports that India may lose the next Cricket World Cup scheduled to be held in 2011.

After the horrific terror attack on Bombay and the 195 deaths it caused , we have another tragedy.

Barely have the funeral pyres of the heroes of Bombay stopped burning that our politicians have begun pointing fingers at each other. Comments like “Failure of entire Government” , “We would have handled it better ” etc etc are doing the rounds. You’d think that such a huge attack would bring about some unity if not forever , at least for a week. It sucks that we have nobody in the government capable of seeing that now we need people to work together.

Sometimes I seriously think we should just let the armed forces handle the running of the country . After all they are the only ones who care about serving the people . Our leaders just care about politics . Who will like to hear what ? Who will vote which way? If i appoint a dalit or a muslim to this post would more people vote for me?  These seem to be the only questions going through their heads while our brave soldiers and innocent hostages are dying at the hands of  terrorists.

1. Matthew Hayden blaming his team’s 2-0 defeat on petty issues like people taking too long to move out of the way of sightscreens .

2. People going overboard and singing praises of India’s economic might to justify the claim that India is not a third world country. Pune Mirror today just took the cake. In an article titled ” Shut up, you third world loser” , they said that India wasn’t a third world country because it had 34 companies in the Forbes Global 2000 ranking for 2008 , the biggest rail network in the world, Infosys hires 1000 locals in Australia, Taj Hotels has a huge office in Sydney , Tata Steel has a presence in Brisbane , Oswal Group is constructing  an ammonia plant in Western  Australia , Sterlite Industries has acquired two copper mines in Tasmania (and this apparently makes a big difference because it’s Ricky Ponting’s home state) and here’s the killer blow (quoting straight from the article) : ” Remember , Sachin Tendulkar’s bat sticker contract can buy out your house ” !

By that logic every country Indian companies have a presence in almost every country in the world. Does that mean every country is inferior to us? And what about all the foreign investment in Inda (BMW , Volkswagen , Skoda , Walmart  just to name a few) ?

I don’t really follow the proceedings in the Lok Sabha , but I do follow most of the big stuff like trust votes. Today’s session was really entertaining and very interesting.

Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Kalawati’ speech was fun , Lalu was hilarious , Omar Abdullah’s speech was brilliant. Then the whole bribing allegations added a lot more drama to the situation. It was quite sad that the Prime Minister , Dr. Manmohan Singh , could not deliver his speech and had to just publish it on his website. The speech was really good [read it here] and it would have  been interesting to see the reactions of LK Advani and Prakash Karat , but unfortunately the BJP could not extend  the basic courtesy of not disrupting the Prime Minister’s speech.

Now that the UPA has won , the only thing left to do is predict tomorrow’s headlines. My money is on a derivative of / lame reference to “Singh is Kinng

Btw , check out this great article. Trust Vote : Bollywood Ishtyle.

This last sunday I went to see the match between the Mumbai Indians and the Deccan Chargers. I figure I should write something about the experience itself since I’ve already written about more important details of the trip .

As some of you might have figured out from one of my recent posts , I worship Sachin Tendulkar. So my basic criterion was to see Sachin. If Sachin had played I would have supported Mumbai unconditionally till the end. But since he didn’t play , I turned to plan B ie ‘Support the Batting Side’ . This was quite a good decision as the match seemed a lot more interesting this way. Mumbai’s innings though quite bad was fun since everyone was cheering on their team.

Deccan’s innings was super fun for me because of the brilliance of Adam Gilchrist. So basically I was cheering for a team for the entire duration of the match and it was awesome fun. Hope to do this again someday.

G.O.D.

Though now I am a bigger football fan than a cricket fan , at some time in the past I was a huge cricket freak. And that was entirely because of Sachin. The first time I watched cricket was the 1996 World Cup (yeah ,i know , i started late) where Sachin was phenomenal.

My best memory of Sachin is the first ball of the 21st over at the semi final in Sharjah on this very day 10 years ago. Shane Warne coming around the wicket . Sachin just steps out and Warney’s first ball is into the stands.Straight down the ground for six.  As Tony Grieg once said ” That’s his way of saying Hello Mr .______ , I’m Sachin Tendulkar. Pleased to meet you”

Even now , I watch India matches depending on whether Sachin plays or not. I get depressed by the thought of Sachin retiring. For I’ve always been a Sachin fan , as long as I’ve been watching cricket. I don’t know what sort of depression I’m going to go into when Sachin actually retires. I hate the 24th of April. Every year it comes and makes Sachin a year older , a year closer to retirement.  And today GOD turns 35. How many more years could he have ?  Sheesh , I’m depressed now.

The Times of India today (April 15th , page 9) printed a photo of the Indian Meteorological department with a temperature indicator saying 35.6 deg C titled “GADGETS SUFFER HEAT STROKE”

Below the photo was written ” The temperature board at the India Meteorological department shows 35.6 deg C as the maximum temperature even though the figure was 39 degrees C on Monday”

Dear ToI,

The photo you have shown is that of the right side of the gate which shows current temperature not maximum temperature. The board on the left side of the gate shows max , min temperature and rainfall.

Going by your reports , I would guess you need to protect yourself from the heat and not the instruments at the IMD.

I’ve got exams tomorrow and I really shouldn’t be here. But i just have to do this.

Just a few minutes ago I happened to switch on the TV to check the news. Guess what Headlines Today has as their top story for the 10 o’clock news….

Big Show and the great Khali set to fight each other.

The news bar at the bottom of the screen informs me that they are the two biggest fighters in the WWE and have never fought each other before.

This is so much more important than Silvio Burlusconi’s win in the Italian general elections or the surge of violence that has killed 28 people in Iraq in the last 24 hours or the Israeli army’s incursion into the Gaza strip …no?
